about

When we first stepped into a recording studio in 1990 to record “Euripides the Jaguar,” I had never seen a mixing board or a multi-track recorder. It was all very new. We quickly discovered “reverb” and double-tracking and, ooh boy, panning! Couldn’t stand the way my voice sounded. All the usual.

During the next five years we recorded every chance we got. Once we hooked up with Casey Neiditch and his 8-track home studio it was all over. We were gonners. Hopelessly hooked on this habit more addictive than oxygen.

This collection of recordings is a signature from those five years of learning. Some of them are unfinished — all of them are a little embarrassing — but Josh, Kiara and I secretly love every one of them. “Dover,” in fact, is my favorite Sugarplastic recording of all time.

For listeners whose first taste of the Sugarplastic came with Bang The Earth Is Round, these recordings might be a surprise. We were just kids. Here are some of our baby pictures.
